They were built in 1916-1917 to 600 mm (1 ft 11 5⁄8 in) gauge.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nThe British War Office decided to adopt the type as its principal military steam locomotive, and Baldwin started production in 1916, building 495 locomotives between October 1916 and April 1917. Some of the class found their way to other theatres of war than Europe and nine were lost at sea. After the war many of these locomotives were sold and went on to work in France, Britain and India.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nBritish narrow-gauge railways which used them included Welsh Highland Railway, Glyn Valley Tramway, Snailbeach District Railways and Ashover Light Railway. The benefits of this design allowed a large locomotive to be built that operates equally effectively in forward and reverse, one which could navigate sharp curves or undulating track unlike rigid wheelbase locomotives and could utilise all its weight for traction – not wasting any on carrying wheels or tenders.\r\n\r\nThe first Double Fairlie built for the Ffestiniog Railway was completed by George England \u0026amp; Co. of London in 1869. Named ‘Little Wonder’, the locomotive was essentially a pair of 0-4-0 Ffestiniog ‘England’ chassis pivoting under a combined boiler. The success of this locomotive in trials on the Ffestiniog Railway showcased the potential of steam powered narrow gauge railways to a worldwide audience and began a long running association of the Fairlie locomotive and the Ffestiniog Railway that can still be seen today. ‘Little Wonder’ generated so much publicity for Fairlie that in return, he granted the Ffestiniog Railway with unrestricted use of his patented design.\r\n\r\nA second Double Fairlie locomotive was commissioned for the Ffestiniog Railway, learning lessons from ‘Little Wonder’, and ‘James Spooner’ was completed by the Avonside Engine Company of Bristol in 1872.\r\n\r\nThe first Double Fairlie to be built at the railway’s own workshops at Boston Lodge was to be named ‘Merddin Emrys’ after the legendry Welsh wizard. The order was placed for the frames in 1877 and an erecting shop was built especially for the construction of the loco. It emerged in 1879 and contained many of the features of the Double Fairlie that we all associate the railway with today. ‘Livingston Thompson’ was next to be outshopped by Boston Lodge in 1886, and then followed a 93 year wait for the next, ‘Earl of Merioneth’, which was built in 1979. With limited funds available, ‘Earl of Merioneth’ was finished with a somewhat economical appearance and quickly gained the nickname ‘The Square’ amongst enthusiasts.\r\n\r\n‘David Lloyd George’ is the most recent Double Fairlie to be completed, emerging from Boston Lodge in 1992, and all four engines built in-house by the Ffestiniog Railway remain extant. As of 2021 ‘Merddin Emrys’ and ‘David Lloyd George’ are in traffic, ‘Livingston Thompson’ can be found on display in the National Railway Museum, York, and ‘Earl of Merioneth’ is in long term storage. In 1977 the remaining parts were gathered together at the Bala Lake Railway.\r\n\r\nIn 1987 the remains were purchased by Chris Scott and work started on restoration. The remains were later moved to the owner’s garage, the Ffestiniog Railway and then to the Leighton Buzzard Railway who agreed to finance the new boiler. Therefore, the Dinorwic wagons were an obvious candidate to join our range of OO9 scale rolling stock and so we are delighted to unveil these all new models of the Dinorwic Slate wagons with sides.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhilst flat bed wagons were used to transport slabs of slate and other large, bulky items, dressed slates which were ready to leave the quarry would be moved around the site and to transhipment yards and docks in wagons like these with sides. The sides and ends were not fully enclosed but instead were much akin to a basket – this open form made the cargo of slates very noticeable and so we’ve included a rather nice load of dressed slates with every wagon to replicate this.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese new Bachmann Narrow Gauge models are fitted with metal wheels and NEM coupling pockets and are supplied with both standard OO9 scale couplings, to couple to other rolling stock and locomotives.
