Rhätische Bahn is one of the major private railway companies in Switzerland, with a railway network over 400 kms connecting such wold-famous tourist cities as Saint-Moritz, Davos, and other by the "Glacier Express". The firm has been a sister railway company with Hakone Mountain Railways for the past 35 years, sharing niknames given to their trains including "Allegra".
Abe8/12 was introduced in 2000, motor coaches with improved amenities, low floors that are barrier-free for passengers, and no need for switching locomotives. It is no less powerful than a locomotive so that it can travel pulling coaches. On top of that, it is equipped with 5 kinds of braking apparatus to cope with steep 70% slopes on the Bernina line. The model sometimes runs on the main lines at a high speed of 100km/h and will even run on tram tracks at a low speed. The model is nicknamed "Allegra" - meaning "Hello" in Rumantsch, a Swiss dialect spoken in the operating region - and is operated on the main line and Bernina line.
